Mobile ID Acceptance on iPhone with NM Verifier App 

Challenge

The introduction of the Mobile ID in New Mexico streamlines and modernizes identity verification processes for residents by providing a secure, user-friendly, and efficient identification accessible via smartphones. This initiative aligns with the State’s commitment to embracing innovative technologies, improving public services, and enhancing the security of digital transactions. Users can add their New Mexico driver’s license or state ID to their phone’s digital wallet, accessing digital identification easily and also quickly providing selected information.

With the introduction of Mobile ID, the State needed a reliable way to verify digital credentials in an efficient and accurate manner. This led New Mexico down a path of developing a mobile verification app. Viagio Technologies was approached by Tyler Technologies to partner in building the State of New Mexico Apple ID Verifier.

Solution

The core of this Apple iOS solution is an application programing interface (API), integrating the user’s mobile device to the State of New Mexico Mobile ID system. Built in Native Swift with NFC communication, the application quickly ensures the validity of Mobile IDs linked to State services. The interface is intuitive, easy to use, and provide benefits both for the user and the State of New Mexico.

The Apple ID Verifier aligns with state and federal regulations regarding data security and user privacy and leverages biometric authentication features built into the iPhone, such as FaceID and TouchID. Using this trusted identity verification system mitigates compliance risks and encourages the adoption of secure, modern technologies across the State’s digital platforms.

Results

The app launched successfully in December 2024. New Mexico’s Mobile ID is accepted on iPhone 17 or later models by downloading the New Mexico ID Verifier app. Using the iPhone to accept Mobile Identification follows ISO 18013-5 standards and Apple Wallet Mobile ID is currently accepted by select businesses and TSA checkpoints, but we anticipate its acceptance rate to grow. By delivering a cutting-edge mobile app for digital ID verification, the State of New Mexico sets a precedent in fostering digital transformation and elevating the quality of public services.
